Mogadisho(HGN)Terrorist operatives and armed groups in Somalia continue to attack Somali authorities, the troops from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and other non-military targets, according to a travel warning of the US Department of State.

Americans should avoid traveling toSomalia because ofthe continued threat ofthe al-Qaeda-linked militant group al-Shabaab and the risks ofkidnapping throughoutthe country, the US Department ofState said ina travel warning onTuesday.

"Terrorist operatives and armed groups inSomalia continue toattack Somali authorities, the troops fromthe African Union Mission inSomalia (AMISOM) and other non-military targets,” the advisory warned. "Kidnapping, bombings, murder, illegal roadblocks, banditry and other violent incidents are common throughoutSomalia, including Somaliland and Puntland.”

The advisory explained that al-Shabaab continues toattack locations popular withwesterners, including restaurants and hotels, noting that there were atleast eight large attacks againsthotels inthe capital Mogadishu last year.

Moreover, the terrorist group has successfully targeted government-controlled areas "with particular emphasis ontargeting government facilities [and] foreign delegations’ facilities,” the advisory noted.

On May 19, one person was killed ina suicide bomb attack ona restaurant inMogadishu asthe Somali government hosted a delegation ofthe UN Security Council there.

Somalia has been mired inan armed conflict withIslamist militants fortwo decades. The government relies heavily onthe African Union’s peacekeepers forprotection.
